There are many packages for LaTeX related to underlining, but most of them have restrictions which make them difficult to use or incompatible with advanced typesetting features. Lua-ul tries to provide underlining for LuaLaTeX which doesn't interfere with any other features, e.g. making sure that even at the start and end of underlined text kerning is respected, that text using complicated OpenType features can still be underlined correctly and that underlining does not interfere with line-breaking. This package is based on code written for a [TeX StackExchange question about underlining while preserving kerning](https://tex.stackexchange.com/a/446488/80496).

Lua-UL – Underlining for LuaLaTeX
This package provides underlining, strikethough, and highlighting using features in LuaLaTeX which avoid the restrictions imposed by other methods. In particular, kerning is not affected, the underlined text can use arbitrary commands, hyphenation works etc.
The package requires LuaTeX version ≥ 1.12.0.
