1. Copied into NewG8*.pfb (from GaramondNo8*.ttf) all glyphs in the T1 encoding that were not already present and modified the tfm files accordingly, so that every T1-encoded accented glyph is present without making composites.
2. Modified the font parameters (BlueValues, etc) to avoid issues with t1lint.

Modified garamondx.sty to require etoolbox package and to define option osf to load choice of text figures \AtEndPreamble, so that choice does not affect math figures, which are always lining figures.

3. Modified garamondx.sty to accept options osf and osfI. The package remains compatible with former versions, but removes the need for the user to call \useosf or \useosfI. In effect,
\usepackage[osf]{garamondx}
loads garamondx with lining figures so that math figures are as expected, then, at the end of the preamble, changes to osf as the text figure style.

The xheight (\fontdimen5) for regular weight italic provided in previous versions was incorrect, leading to a wrongly placed vector math accent. This has been corrected, and the math metrics have been further refined. If using version 1.08 or later of newtx, you will see a much improved result from, eg, $\vec{x}$.

Changes in version 1.01
The original metrics for GaramondNo8 led to collisions between parentheses, brackets, braces and upper-case glyphs. These are modified in this version to reduce collisions, at the cost of increased spacing around those glyphs. The fontinst source files are now included, and a version of the documentation in French is provided, thanks to René Fritz.

Installation:

This package is not part of TeXLive because its licence does not permit distribution for a fee. 

Mac OS X: You may install manually (instructions below) or, more conveniently, google for getnonfreefonts, download the package and follow its instructions. There are two installer script, getnonfreefonts and getnonfreefonts-sys, the first intalling fonts in your home texmffolder, the second to a system texmf folder, the latter being highly recommended. You should always use the same method, otherwise you may mix incompatible versions, with unpredictable results.

Manual methods: 
Reread the last two sentences, as they apply also to manual installations. Additionally, doo not mix manual installation with getnonfreefronts as they have different path names in some cases. If you use one and wish to switch, you should erase all parts of any existing distribution before beginning the new installation. Instructions are provided at the end of this README.

Expand garamondx.zip into an otherwise empty temporary folder, open a Terminal window
and cd to that temporary folder.

Method A (recommended): type

sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/web2c
sudo cp -Rfp * /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local
sudo echo Map zgm.map >> /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/web2c/updmap.cfg
sudo /usr/texbin/mktexlsr
sudo -H /usr/texbin/updmap-sys

Method B: If you insist on making your font installations in your home folder, potentially making your personal installation become out of sync with updates to TeXLive, use instead

(i) if you checked Update for All Users in TeXLive utility

cp -Rfp * ~/Library/texmf

then

/usr/texbin/updmap --enable Map=zgm.map

(ii) otherwise

cp -Rfp * ~/Library/texmf

then

sudo /usr/texbin/updmap-sys --enable Map=zgm.map

Linux: Very similar to Mac OS X.

MikTeX: 

Copy the garamondx.tds.zip to the root of the folder you use for personal additions to the TeX trees, open a command window, chdir to that folder, and type

unzip garamondx.tds
initexmf --update-fndb
initexmf --edit-config-file updmap

The latter command should open updmap.cfg in your default editor, commonly Notepad. Add the line 

Map garamondx.map 

to updmap.cfg, save and close. Then, in the command window, type

initexmf --mkmaps

You can ignore error messages that may occur here. This should result in a properly enabled garamondx.

Uninstalling garamondx on Linux and Mac OS X:

Versions of garamondx prior to 1.093 installed the fontinst source in an inappropriate folder. To delete this folder from its possible locations, run the following commands.

sudo /bin/rm -Rf `/usr/texbin/kpsewhich --var TEXMFLOCAL`/src
/bin/rm -Rf `/usr/texbin/kpsewhich --var TEXMFHOME`/src

All the folders containing the garamondx fonts and support files may be found by running the commands

find `kpsewhich --var TEXMFLOCAL` -type d -name garamondx 2>/dev/null
find `kpsewhich --var TEXMFHOME` -type d -name garamondx 2>/dev/null

from which you may remove all folders manually. As I don't wish to be responsible for catastrophic file deletions, I'll omit the "pipe to xargs rm -Rf" parts of these commands.

Finally, get disable the old map files with:

sudo -H /usr/texbin/updmap-sys --disable zgm.map

If you get any output from the command
/usr/texbin/kpsewhich --all pdftex.map | grep -v '/usr/local/'
you should also run
/usr/texbin/updmap --disable zgm.map
