Since the font commands of LaTeX 2.09 or plainTeX are no longer to be used with LaTeX2e, some classes no longer define them. So using them results in an error message. Other classes, such as the KOMA-Script classes, do define them, but only in such a way that their use results in a somewhat more informative error message. However, since some packages or old BiBTeX styles require these commands, it may sometimes be necessary to define these obsolete font commands anyway. This is what the package is for.

defoldfonts – Define old font commands
In 1994, with LaTeX2ε, the old font commands \rm, \sf, \tt, \bf, \it, \sl, and \sc became obsolete. This package defines them, and also the deprecated KOMA-Script command \sfb.
