The book TeX for the Impatient was originally published in 1990 by
Addison-Wesley. It contains both tutorial and reference information on
primitive and plain TeX; it does not discuss LaTeX.
Now, it's been declared out of print and A-W has reverted all rights to
us, the authors. We've decided to make the book available in source
form, under the GNU Free Documentation License, as our way of supporting
the community which supported the book in the first place.
Information about the free edition is included in the preface, the
copyright page, and the README.
We'd be interested in hearing about any projects undertaken with this
material. We don't plan to make any further changes or additions to the
book ourselves, except for correction of any outright errors reported to
us, and perhaps inclusion of the illustrations.

TeX – A sophisticated typesetting engine
TeX is a typesetting system that incorporates a macro processor.
A TeX source document specifies or incorporates a number of macro
definitions that instruct the TeX engine how to typeset the
document. The TeX engine also uses font metrics generated by
METAFONT, or by any of several other
mechanisms that incorporate fonts from other sources into an
environment suitable for TeX.
TeX has been, and continues, a basis and an inspiration for
several other programs, including e-TeX
and PDFTeX.
The distribution includes the source of Knuth’s
TeX book; this source is there to read, as an
example of writing TeX — it should not be processed
without Knuth’s direct permission.
